Neutrons to Measure Temperatures in Electronics

Measuring a device’s temperature is important for tracking performance and designing the materials of which it’s made. A new study from Osaka University is cutting edge. Neutrons have been used to measure temperatures quickly and accurately. This will lead to improvements for all kinds of electronics.
This new method of estimating temperature inside the device uses a technique called Neutron Resonance Absorption (NRA). By looking at neutrons being absorbed by atomic nuclei at certain energy levels, the effects of the materials can be inferred.
Scientist generated high intensity laser beams to create neutrons. The neutrons were slowed to very low energy levels And passed through a sample. It successfully returned details About the material and temperatures with ultra fast speed.
“ This technology makes it possible to instantaneously and accurately measure temperature,” states Zechen Lan, Head researcher. “As our method is nondestructive, it can be used to monitor devices like batteries and semiconductor devices.”
The NRA measurements are created with a single pulse of neutrons. The new technique can obtain data from 100 nanoseconds or 1/10 a millionth of a second. The results results are near instant, so they can be measured in nearly real time, with detailed analysis.
Another huge plus to the project, it’s about 1/10 of the size of similar equipment. This means laboratories elsewhere can easily install their own version.
