What are nanoparticles? Heartsound Audio

Nanoparticles are an ultra fine unit with dimensions measured in nanometers (nm; 1nm= 10 -9 meter or 1nm= .000000001m ).

Nanoparticles exist in the natural world and are also created as a part of human activity. Because of their microscopic size,  they have unique material characteristics, and manufactured nanoparticles may find practical applications in a variety of areas, including medicine, engineering, catalysis, and environmental remediation.

There are three major physical properties of nanoparticles, and all are interrelated. First,  they are HIGHLY mobile in the free state, causing them to have tremendously slow sedimentation rates. Typically, nanoparticles will self-assemble for one or both of two reasons: molecular interactions and external direction.

Secondly,  they have enormous specific surface areas. This means that more of the material is exposed to it's  surroundings, which can increase it's reactivity and speed up chemical reactions. For example a cubic centimeter of cubic nanoparticles has a surface area that's larger than a football field.  (This increased reactivity can help create better catalysts, such as those used in car catalytic converters to reduce air pollution.)

Lastly, they may exhibit what are known as quantum effects. These include quantum confinement, electrons in nanostructured materials are confined in space and are unable to move freely. Turnability, the size of a nanoparticle can be used to fine-tune a material's properties- for example, it can change it's chemical reactivity, melting point, or electrical conductivity, depending on the size of the particle. The electrical conductivity phenomenon in nanoparticles has been one of the characteristics I utilize in my product line at Heartsound Audio.

Other quantum effects that occur at the nanoscale include: electromagnetic forces. wave-particle duality, and tunneling.
