The World's Oldest Completed Surviving Song; The Seiklos Stele

This is the Seiklos stele. It is the oldest surviving completed song ever recorded. It dates from the 1st or 2nd century. The inscription was written as an epitaph for Seiklos's departed wife. It includes a poem with ancient Greek musical notation. The poem, in part, reads:

While you live Shine

Have no Grief at all

Life exists only for a short while

and Time demands his due.

Seiklos copes with the loss of a loved one by acknowledging the powerlessness of the human condition. From one perspective, time is invincible, while life is a miracle we can only experience in the moment to moment.

hugs,
Krissy
